1996 Teacher of the Year Award

Dr. Cindy Cupp

The National Right to Read Foundation is pleased to announce that the 1996 recipient of the Patrick Groff Teacher of the Year Award is Dr. Cindy Cupp, Director of Reading for the Georgia Department of Education. Dr. Cupp is being recognized for her 26 years of teaching children to read using time tested and research proven principles of instruction, including explicit and systematic phonics instruction.

She is now having the opportunity to spread this instruction far beyond the confines of her classroom through the Georgia Reading Initiative which is instituting systematic phonics programs in eight schools across Georgia. This can become a proven model of success for Georgia and the nation.

Congratulations, Cindy!
